Accessing the Wisdom of the Heart
The path to true enlightenment lies not in the mind, but in the heart. It is through the cultivation of the qualities of the heart that we can truly connect with our inner selves and the world around us.
But what exactly are the qualities of the heart?
They include compassion, love, kindness, empathy, and forgiveness. These are the traits that allow us to see beyond our own egos and connect with others on a deeper level.
To cultivate these qualities, we must first understand that they are not something we can simply acquire overnight. They are the result of consistent effort and practice.
Thich Nhat Hanh, once said, “The seed of compassion, love and understanding is already there, but it needs watering on a daily basis.”
One way to water this seed is through mindfulness and meditation. By taking time each day to quiet the mind and focus on the present moment, we can begin to let go of our preconceptions and judgments, and open our hearts to the world around us.
Another way to cultivate the qualities of the heart is through acts of kindness and service. By reaching out to others and helping those in need, we can begin to understand the interconnectedness of all living beings, and develop a sense of compassion and empathy for others.
But perhaps the most important aspect of cultivating the qualities of the heart is forgiveness.
Holding onto anger and resentment only harms ourselves, and prevents us from fully experiencing the beauty and wonder of the world. As the spiritual leader, Rumi, once said, “The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.
The Narrow Path
“Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it” – Matthew 7:13-14 (NET)
